Racines have released their debut single ‘Market Miracolo‘, the first taste of their album Arilos Mennar, which arrives June 5 via Locomotiv Records. The electronic duo formed in 2022 when Rokeya and Anissa met and began weaving their backgrounds into a shared project. Rokeya, London-based and of Indo-Italian-Welsh heritage, works as producer, performer, selector and curator; her site-specific work for Ableton and L-Acoustics sit alongside releases on Timpan Records, Lump, Kosa, La Tempesta, Mamboz, Beached Records, Kirmana Records and Volubilian Records. Anissa, the Italian-Algerian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, draws directly from tradition and has collaborated with Moni Ovadia and Max Gazzè in music, theatre and original soundtrack work. As daughters of multiple cultures, the two create music that feels ancestral, powerful, and earthy.
‘Market Miracolo‘ comes across as an anthem for an inner journey, where love, shadow and light stay thoroughly intertwined. The track places the “market” at its core, shaping it into a living, pulsating space built from cultures, languages and encounters. Racines use this image as a working metaphor for human experience itself: a constant crossing point where stories, identities and sounds braid together, forming and reforming a collective narrative that evolves. Arilos Mennar refers to the seeds of the pomegranate, a fruit loaded with Mediterranean meanings of resilience, rebirth, death, life and union. “Mennar”, from Algerian Arabic, means “from fire,” the primal generative feminine force.
Racines lift those seeds from the earth, mother of traditions, and set them alight with electronics. The feminine perspective runs through every layer as both viewpoint and poetics, creating connections and new imaginaries. Tribal percussion forms the basis for this track and radiates throughout, with the hypnotic vocal performance guiding the listener through the vision set forth by Racines.
Racines had this to say: “At the heart of the narrative is the symbol of the market: a living, pulsating space made of cultures, languages and encounters“.
