Precocious producer badfocus unleashes genre-defying EP ‘realities’

Prague-based producer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist badfocus, the solo project of 21-year-old Prokop Korb, released his new EP realities, along with a video for its title track, on November 29 via badfocus Music. Since launching his project in 2020 at just 18, badfocus has quickly established himself as a rising star, performing at major festivals across Europe and Canada, including EXIT, Sziget, and M4 Montreal, and opening for electronic icons like Max Cooper, Pantha du Prince, and Grandbrothers. Drawing inspiration from artists as diverse as Kendrick Lamar, Erykah Badu, and Jon Hopkins, badfocus crafts a distinct sound blending intricate alternative hip-hop with experimental electronic textures. Known for his intuitive creative process, he fosters an unconstrained environment for collaborators, resulting in music that resonates with fans of XXXTentacion, Saba, and Arca. This promising talent has also graced international showcases like Tallinn Music Week, MUSEXPO, and All About Music, building a global reputation for his genre-defying artistry.

The realities EP, produced by badfocus himself, is a six-track exploration of glitchy textures and heartfelt emotion. Featuring collaborations with Klara Wodehn, Twisted DV, Chris Villon, and ATM BENNY, the project melds ethereal ambience, kinetic breakbeats, and auto-tuned vocals. The opener, realities’, sets an evocative tone with shuffling percussion and a dreamlike, nostalgic video. Klara Wodehn shines with vibrant hyperpop vocals in ‘tancovatforhours’, while Twisted DV delivers sharp lyricism over steady beats in silverado’. Chris Villon’s feature on throwaway cup’ brings introspection, and ATM BENNY’s vocals cap the EP with dynamic Drum ‘N Bass energy, leaving listeners captivated. Mixed and mastered by Láďa Štěrba, realities is both immersive and resonant.

Speaking about the EP, badfocus divulged: “Each track is like a memory for me. Memory of the amazing people with whom I collaborated, of the things that we’ve been through together. It’s basically the same as if you curate a playlist for yourself made of songs that make you feel a certain way regardless of the genre.”
