Q&A with chilled beats composer Liam Thomas

Sharing the song collaboration ‘Purple’ with music producer AK, Monstercat signed electronic composer Liam Thomas is sure to make waves in 2022. His latest single ‘November’ is a lo-fi-infused ambient track that is perfect for a Sunday afternoon drive where you want to immersive yourself in the sights. Finding a love for classical music from an early age with piano lessons, Thomas explored his listening palette later with the layering works of  Flume and Skrillex. The Welsh- Australian composer combines his influences technique with a delicate ambient lens and the result is chilled-out beat fusions.  Below we get a taste of the producer’s world.

If someone has never heard your music, which keywords would you personally use to describe your overall sound and style?

Zen, exciting, relaxing, calming.

Tell us about yourself. How did you get into music?

I started making music when I was young, playing the piano. I then fell in love with production after hearing Skrillex’s album in 2011.

When you compose and produce tracks, do you make music for yourself or do you make it with others in mind?

I understand how much music can help & heal an individual, so usually, I do write thinking of others. Although there are some tracks that I’ve made for myself.

Comfort the disturbed or disturb the comfortable – what is your aim with your music?

I feel as if ambient/chill music was normalized more it could impact so many people in a positive way.

Has your arsenal of equipment changed much since you first started?

Most definitely! I’ve been collecting since I started. And I still have some of my old speakers & synths. Now I rock a more simple but better setup!

Three favorite tracks of all time?

‘Tiny Cities’ – Flume

‘Pretty Bye Bye’ – Skrillex

‘Meridian’ – Odesza

What inspires you outside of music?

My surroundings & my friends. I have such creative & cool friends, they always have a massive impact on my art.

What is the best or strangest reaction you’ve had to your music this far?

I’ve shown some people & they tell me it feels like they’re flying through space & explain a full story. That is always cool & can be pretty funny!

What, in your opinion would be the perfect genre fusion?

Liquid pop.

Do you consider the Internet and social media as fundamental in building a career in music today, and what is your personal relationship with the new technology at hand?

I think it most definitely has a massive impact on the marketing & advertising side of things, yes, but you could market & market but without quality, it’s hard to break through.

What can we expect from you in the near future? Any upcoming projects or releases in the pipeline that you would like to tell us about?

I have an EP coming soon, maybe around April time that I’m super super excited about! Then I’d love to experiment a bit more with sounds.
